Miniater's resignation irks supporters:Indefinite strike called
Agartala, Apr 18 (UNI) Even as the Opposition parties welcomed Tripura Food and Civil Supplies minister Sahid Chowdhury's resignation, supporters from his constituency Boxonagar went on a rampage today, burning vehicles and blocking road for more than four hours and later called an indefinite strike.
Food and Civil Supplies minister resigned from cabinet yesterday giving into the opposition parties demand.
The opposition had been demanding the resignation of the minister for the last several weeks charging the minister with having connection with arrested Bangladeshi criminal Mamun Mia, who is said to be a HUJI activist from Bangladesh.
After the news of the minister's resignation trickled in yesterday, the agitated supporters took to the streets today morning and closed the road from Agratala to Boxongar for more than four hours and set ablaze some vehicles as a mark of protest.
Police soon cordoned off the area and after discussion with SDPO Sonamura Kamalendu Chakraborty the protesters finally withdrew their road blockade. Though the road blockade was withdrawn, the supporters of the minister had called an indefinite strike in the Boxonagar.
Speaking to UNI,Mr Chakraborty said '' the situation is under control and no report of any major violence has been reported so far.
