2014 CW Games may increase prostitution, child trafficking in Glasgow

By Staff

London, April 18 : The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has warned that prostitution and child trafficking may rise in Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

The organisation also called for vigilance to contain any rise in the sex trade during the 2014 event.

STUC general secretary Grahame Smith pointed out that other major events like the World Cup and the Olympic Games had become centres of sexual exploitation in the past.

Smith said that an increased number of men descending on host cities meant that they could be transformed into hot spots for traffickers.

He stressed that there was a "need to ensure when the Commonwealth Games come to Glasgow that it doesn't become a magnet for traffickers."

"The STUC is absolutely delighted the Commonwealth Games has come to Glasgow. We just want to ensure that people are not exploited," the Scotsman quoted Mary Senior, the STUC assistant secretary, as saying.
