Theft at famous Kapaleeswarar temple

Chennai, Apr 17: In a major heist, a main 'Hundi' of the ancient Kapaleeswarar temple here was looted by some unidentified men early today.

Police sources said the exact amount looted from the hundi in front of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple was yet to be ascertained. However, initial estimate suggested that it could have had amount up to several lakhs, besides precious jewelley.

The incident, which took place despite the presence of security personnel and installation of CCTV cameras at different corners of the temple, came to light when the temple was opened around 0500 hrs this morning for regular worship.

As the news spread, tension prevailed in the area.

All the entry points to the temple were sealed.

As the CCTVs were out of order, no video footage was available for possible clues.

Senior police officials, including city Commissioner of Police Nanchil Kumaran, rushed to the spot with sniffer dogs and conducted search operations.
