Olympic torch relay begins from Rashtrapati Bhavan
New Delhi, Apr 17: The India-leg of the Olympic Torch relay began from Rashtrapati Bhavan here this afternoon amid unprecedented security in the wake of nationwide protests by Tibetans against the Chinese ''repression'' in Tibet. The 2.3-km curtailed run started at around 1645 hrs and will culminate at the India Gate.
Some 70 prominent personalities, including 47 sportspersons, film stars, politicians and sports administrators, are taking part in the torch relay that has attracted worldwide media attention in view of the large presence of Tibetans in this country. A three-layered security cover has been provided to the torch.
More than 15,000 personnel drawn from the NSG, the Delhi Police and other central para military organisations have been deployed along the Rajpath for the purpose.
