Hooghly, Apr 16 (UNI) A Trinamool Congress district committee leader was today allegedly assaulted by CPI(M) activists when he was proceeding to the Arambagh Block Development Office (BDO) along with party workers to file the nominations for the Panchayat elections.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Swapan Bagchi said Trinamool district committee leader and convenor Swapan Nandy was admitted to the Arambagh Sub-Dvisional Hospital in critical condition.
Trinamool supporters alleged that CPI(M) activists severely assaulted Mr Nandy when he, along with his party workers, had gone to the BDO to file the nominations for the Panchayat elections.
An FIR was lodged at the Arambagh police station in this connection and an investigation was on in this matter, police said, adding that no one was arrested so far.
However, CPI(M) local MLA Binoy Dutta denied the allegations and said the incident was an outcome of internal squabbles within the Trinamool Congress.
Meanwhile, Trinamool leaders warned of launching a massive agitation unless the miscreants responsible for the incident were arrested.
