London, Apr 14: Harry Potter is again in news with movie giant Warner Bros beginning a legal battle with a director who claims he devised an earlier version of the character.
Director John Buechler's little known movie 'Troll' was released in 1986, which featured a young boy called Harry Potter Jnr. Mr Buechler now intends to create a 20 million pound remake. Lawyers of Warner Bros have warned him against it, saying they will defend their rights to J K Rowling's character.
According to Mr Buechler's partner, producer Peter Davy, ''There are a lot of similarities between the theme of Rowling's books and the original Troll. Buechler was shocked when she came out with Harry Potter.'' Ms Rowling, however, maintained that Harry Potter was her original creation and she had never seen Troll.
Warner Bros spokesman Scott Rowe said last night, ''If these producers intend to remake Troll they'd better tread carefully not to infringe on our rights.'' On Wednesday J K Rowling was presented with a lifetime achievement award at the British Book Awards.
