Srinagar, Apr 13: The Congress will make serious efforts to facilitate reservation for women in parliament, says party President Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing a party rally in Jammu on Saturday, Gandhi said that the government is committed to the welfare of women and has passed important bills like one against domestic violence. “Creating reservation for women in democratic institutions was the Rajiv Gandhi"s last desire. Women must work together to strengthen the Congress party and ensure its victory in the State," Gandhi added.

She also referred to the 1989 Panchayati Raj scheme, the Anganwari movement, the Asha scheme and the Indira Gandhi old age pension scheme at the meeting and mentioned that the Centre has provided a Rs 4,500 crore development package to the State.

She complemented the State Government for constructing more than 4,000 houses to accommodate 25,000 displaced people.
