Chennai, Apr 11 (UNI) Two notorious rowdies, wanted in several murder cases in southern Tuticorin district, were shot dead in an encounter at Aynavaram area in the city this morning.
Police sources said a special team from Tuticorin, acting on an information that the rowdies, Sudalaimuthu and ''Bomb'' Jayakumar came to the city this morning and were hiding in a house.
The team headed by Tuticorin District DSP Md Ghouse Khan and inspector Raghunath, sub-inspector Hariharan and a grade-I constable, forced their way into the house around 0930 hrs where the rowdies were staying.
The duo, attacked the police party with sickles, injuring Mr Hariharan and the constable, and attempted to flee the scene.
However, police opened fire in self-defence, killing both of them on the spot.
The bodies were taken to Kilpauk Medical College for post-mortems.
The injured cops were admitted to the Government General Hospital.
Police quoting initial investigations said Sudalaimuthu, involved in several murder cases, was said to be a close associate of Tuticorin-based Gangster Venkatesa Pannaiyar, who was gunned down by the police in an encounter in the city in September 2003.
About 13 warrants were pending against ''Bomb'' Jayakumar (36) and the Tuticorin police had been on the look out for them for the last two weeks.
