Rodrigues for making education more purposeful

Chandigarh, Apr 11 (UNI) Launching an action plan for combining moral values and civic duties in the education curriculum, the Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gen (Retd) SF Rodrigues today called upon principals and heads of education institutions of the Union Territory to join in this major effort.

The action plan envisages a multi-prolonged approach, to sensitise the teaching community and transmit the message to the students through various learning processes, focusing on the core values of being an effective member of the community. The programme will focus on teaching through story telling, screening of movies, visits students to various institutions like old age homes, hospitals, slum areas, orphanage, homes for destitute and mentally retarded and learning about our heritage and culture.

Describing this endeavour as a novel programme of great relevance, General Rodrigues said that "it has three major elements relating to basic human values, with the focus on a personal value system, the inculcation of a sense of responsibility towards society and our duty to the state and the nation." He impressed upon the principals the need to restructure the teaching processes and make them more purposeful.

General Rodrigues suggested them to analyze the various aspects of the programme and send in their suggestions for further modification for the benefit of the students.

Ms Raji P Srivastava, Special Secretary Finance who is the nodal officer of this project gave an account of the outlines of this programme and highlighted the action schedule being implemented in the schools.

She said that every school had been involved in various activities and inspiring themes with art work, poem and messages had been created to propagate and make it a mass movement.

She said that this programme would help in redefining the role of education in human life and making our children aware of their social and civic responsibilities.
