Barreto's passport case to be heard on April 15

Barasat, Apr 11 (UNI) A local court today directed the contesting lawyers to appear before it on April 15 regarding the seizure of Mohun Bagan's Brazilian footballer Jose Ramirez Barreto's passport by Customs department on March 20 at the city airport.

Barasat district Judge Bandana Roy passed the order when defence lawyers Dipak Dey and Tarak Mukherjee told her the Customs authorities had refused to return the passport of Barreto, who was now on bail, and violating an earlier order of the same court.

Barreto was arrested on March 20 from Kolkata airport on his way to Rio-de-Jeneiro, for allegedly violating the Customs Act by attempting to export foreign currencies over 20,000 US dollars.

The Barasat court had granted Barreto's prayer for bail but ordered the Customs to seize his passport.

The court in its third hearing on April 7 said that Barreto can visit his home country, Brazil, on a condition that he would return by May 25 and deposit his passport to the Customs department as a criminal case was pending against him.

District judge Bandana Roy after modifying an order, passed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate in-charge of Barasat on April three, directed the Customs officials to return passport on a personal bond of Mohun Bagan club secretary Anjan Mitra.

Later, Mohun Bagan treasurer Madan Dutta was to collect the passport of behalf of Barreto.
