Wireless market grows 11.74% for quarter ended Dec 2007

New Delhi, Apr 10 (UNI) Trai today said the country's wireless market grew by 11.74 per cent with addition of 24.54 million subscribers, internet subscribers increased to 10.36 million and broadband subscriber base reached 3.13 million.

The quarterly Performance Indicators of Indian Telecom Services for the quarter ending December 2007 released showed that the total subscriber base of the wireline and wireless services reached 272.87 million for the quarter ending December 2007 as against 248.65 million for the quarter ending September 2007, thus registering an increase of 9.74 per cent.

The tele-density for the quarter ending December 2007 reached 23.87 compared to 21.87 for the quarter ending September 2007, said a statement.

The subscriber base for wireless services has increased from 209.07 million for the quarter ending September 2007 to 233.62 million in quarter ending December 2007, whereas subscriber base of Wireline service has decreased from 39.58 million for the quarter ending September 2007 to 39.25 million in quarter ending December 2007.

Rural Wireline subscriber base has decreased from 11.99 million in quarter ending September 2007 to 11.75 million for the quarter ending December 2007, thus showing a negative growth of two per cent.

The rural wireless subscriber base has increased from 43.98 million for the quarter ending September 2007 to 52.52 million during this quarter, registering a growth of 19.42 per cent.

The number of Public Call Offices (PCOs) in the country has increased from 5.78 million to 5.96 million by registering growth of 3.11 per cent for the quarter ending December 2007.
