New Delhi, Apr 9 (UNI) The All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) today came down heavily on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for her remarks against AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, and said she should have encouraged the Young MP to work for Dalit uplift, instead of objecting to it.
What provoked AIMC President Prabha Thakur was the recent statement of Ms Mayawati that Mr Gandhi had taken bath using a special soap after his stay with the dalits during his recent tour of Orissa and Karnataka.
''Ms Mayawati, who talks about dalit uplift, should feel happy and should have encouraged Mr Rahul Gandhi as his younger brother instead of objecting to it. This does not behove a woman of her stature,'' she said in a statement here.
Thakur alleged that there was a change in the attitude of Ms Mayawati who ''now cares less for her dalit ministers and leaders ... She seldom feels joy in visiting her dalit brethrens and wants herself confined to the comforts of her lavish house.'' ''There is a change in her tone too and may be because of all this she took this step of making an irresponsible statement against Mr Gandhi,'' Dr Thakur said.
Saying that the Congress had always worked for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, she said Mr Gandhi has inherited this quality from the Nehru-Gandhi family.
