Puducherry, Apr 9: The Union Goverenment has agreed inprinciple to set up a Sepcial Economic Zone (SEZ) in Puducherry, Minister for Industries V Vaithilingam told the Legislative Assembly today.
Replying to a question, he said more than 182 hectare of land had been acquired in Karasur village for setting up the proposed SEZ and there was no opposition from the farmers.
He said it was already announced that multi-product SEZ would be set up here and the Puducherry Government had received no fresh guidelines from the Centre.
The Cabinet would recommend the Centre to establish a SEZ in Karaikal and the expression of interest for the purpose would be called later.
Mr Vaithilingam said 1,023 survey numbers in two revenue villages have been acquired and the price to the tune of Rs 36 crore for 34 survey numbers had already been disbursed.
With a view to generating more employment opportunities in the Union Territory, the administration would insist the units to be started in the SEZ to provide jobs, he added.
