Gulbarga, Apr 8 (UNI) Ten people were injured in violence today when police resorted to lathicharge on a rampaging mob protesting against last night's robbery in a temple in Jevargi town, about 40 km from here.

Police said that some miscreants robbed the famous Mahalakshmi temple last night. The thieves, after breaking open the main door, also robbed two temple hundis. They decamped with 30 kg silver ornaments and 40 grams of gold jewellery.

A large number of people took to the streets protesting against the robbery. They pelted stones and damaged a police jeep, two KSRTC buses and a private bus. The agitators also resorted to a 'rasta-roko' on the Bidar-Srirangapatna road, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge and lob teargas shells to disperse the mob. Ten people were injured in the violence.

Police had taken into custody Siddalingeswara Swamy, head of the Siddalingeswara Mutt and about 100 others.

The situation was tense but under control.

Additional forces had been rushed to Jevargi.
