State to request Centre to amend Motor Vehicles Act
Mumbai, Apr 8 (UNI) Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil told the Legislative Council today that Maharashtra will urge the Centre to amend the Motor Vehicles Act 1989 to permit use of Marathi number plates on vehicles.
Mr Patil made the assurance while replying to a calling attention moved by Madhukar Sarpotdar, Diwakar Raote and other Shiv Sena members who pointed out that it was an offence to have number plates written in Marathi.
The Regional Transport Authority officials, they pointed out, were imposing fines on owners of vehicles that were found with number plates in Marathi. The members urged that necessary directions be given to the RTA officials to allow usage of such number plates.
To which, Mr Patil pointed out that action against the vehicles were being taken under the Central Motor Vehicles Act and the State Government will request the Centre to carry out appropriate amendments to allow such usage.
