More powers to police commissionerate in twin cities
Bhubaneswar, Apr 8 (UNI) The newly introduced Police Commissionerate system in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will be vested with additional power.
A decision in this regard was taken at a high level meeting held here to assess the success of the system, which was implemented in January.
The meeting decided to empower the Commissionerate with power to deal with Arms Act, Explosive Act, unlawful activities, National Security Act and compounding.
Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda requested the government last month to transfer these power to the Commissionerate for maintaining law and order.
Official sources here said a notification in this regard would be made after the Urban Police Rule was approved by the government.
A joint meeting of Police, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and Transport department would be held soon to improve the traffic arrangement in the twin cities.
The sources said the meeting also decided to fill up the posts lying vacant in the Commissionerate in phases and develop the infrastructure.
A special security battalion in addition to the 7th battalion would be raised for providing security to the VIPs and important structures and installations.
Among others Chief Secretary Ajit Tripathy, Home Secretary T K Mishra, DGP Gopal Chandra Nanda present at the meeting.
