TN gets 54 projects of housing, civic amenities for urban poor

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Tamil Nadu has got 54 projects under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) and the Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation approved 30 projects for the state under IHSDP at a cost of Rs 225.67 crore for construction of 17506 houses for the poor.

The cost includes the Central share of Rs 169.19 and state share of Rs 56.47 crore. The total Additional Central Assistance amounting to Rs. 84.60 crore has been released by the Ministry of Finance.

Under the BSUP, the projects amounting to Rs 2134.11 crore have been approved to construct 85607 dwelling units in the three mission cities in the state.

The Central share of Rs 947.36 crore and state share of Rs 1186.75 crore have been approved. The total additional Central Assistance of Rs.215.15 crore has also been released.

The Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme was launched by the Prime Minister in December 2005 for urban slum dwellers.

The existing Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) and the discontinued National Slum Development Programme (NSDP) are subsumed in the IHSDP for holistic slum development.

The programme covers all the towns except the 63 mission towns/cities covered under the BSUP under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The BSUP scheme was launched by the Prime Minister in December 2005 for the urban slum dwellers who are residing in dilapidated conditions in the identified 63 mission cities.
