Mizoram police arrests suspected militants
Aizawl, Apr 7 (UNI) The Kolasib police arrested nine suspected members of a lesser-known underground outfit near the Mizoram-Assam border, Kolasib Additional SP Lalremmuana told UNI here today.
The Kolasib police had received complaints that some armed miscreants, in army camouflage, were extorting money from some non-tribal labourers working at a paddy field at Kolasib district near the Assam border on March 31.
Acting on this information, police rushed to the spot and launched a massive manhunt in the entire area last week.
''During the operation for five consecutive days, we nabbed nine members of the gang, the last one yesterday,'' Mr Lalremmuana said.
Police also seized local-made pistols, knives, Army uniforms, a letterhead of the United Democratic Liberation People and a number of extortion notes from their possession, the sources said.
The officials added that the operation was not yet complete and they were still on the lookout for some more members of the organisation.
The arrested militants included the gang leader A R Majumdar, who is wanted by the Katlicherra police in Assam for murder, abduction and extortion cases.
