Madurai, Apr 6: Two undertrials were hacked to death by an unidentified gang here today. Police said Karaiyadi Madasamy (45) and his younger brother Thirumalai Velu (42) were waylaid by a five-member armed gang. The members of the gang came on two motorcycles, attacked them indiscriminately and fled the scene.

The murder occurred near the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) office in the heart of the city. The undertrails were proceeding towards the police station as per the directions of the Sessions Court when the incident happened. The deceased were the members of a seven membered-gang, which had murdered one Periyasamy Pandiya Thevar at Kuruvampatti village in Tirunelveli district on December 17, last year over money dispute.

Police arrested the gang. However, the Sessions Court had released Karaiyadi Madasamy and Thirumalai Velu on a conditional bail recently. Police suspect the double murder might have been carried out to avenge the killing of Periyasamy.

Based on the information, senior police officials rushed to the spot and the bodies were removed to the Government Rajaji Hospital here. A special police team has been formed to nab the culprits, police added. Earlier, Director General of Police, A K Jain, was in the city to review the law and order situation in southern districts of the state.
