Chennai, Apr 5 (UNI) ''Self-confidence and belief in one's capabilities will lead to success,'' Special Commissioner and Tamil Nadu Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Secretary K Ashok Vardhan Shetty said today.

Delivering a special address at the College Day celebrations of the Easwari Engineering College, part of the SRM Group of Institutions here this evening, he said the engineering students should consider bureaucracy as a career.

''More technocrats should take to civil services as a career,'' he said and exhorted the students to equip themselves through continuous study.

''College education is a key that opens a plethora of opportunities. If you equip yourself, you will be the popular and successful employees,'' he added.

Urging the students to have vision and compassion, he said having a vision was not only important for students as individuals, it was all the more important for an institution and the country.

''But the vision has to be backed by necessary effort with proper thinking and planning. Mere vision without any plan of action, will not bear fruit,'' he said and added that passion was also more important as it separated average performer from a good performer.

L and T Infotech Vice-President R C Swamy, who was the guest of honours, spoke on the need for overall personality development of the students with high intellectual levels and good moral values.

Later, Mr Shetty distributed certificates and medals to students who acheived 100 per cent attendance rates and ranks holders of the college.

SRM Group of Institutions founder-chairman T R Pachamuthu spoke about the various efforts taken by the college management in upgrading the skills of the students to make them employable.

The day also marked the sports day celebrations of the college in which Chief Guest Dr K Karunakaran, Chairman, Sports Board of Anna University, urged the students to devote at least half an hour daily for exercises.

''Exercises will keep the stress away and lead to a healthy body and healthy mind,'' he added.
