Heavy spells throughout Bengal, lightning kills two in Nadia

Kolkata, Apr 4 (UNI) Intermittent heavy to moderate showers since last night throughout West Bengal left two dead in Nadia district even as the citizens enjoyed the much-needed respite from the oppressive summer heat.

The Alipore Met department recorded 50.7 mm rainfall since for the past 24 hours in the city and its suburbs. Spells of rain and thunderstorms will continue for the next 48 hours, it added.

A report received here from Nadia district stated that at least two people were killed and three seriously injured when lightning struck them in the Nakashipara area of the district late last night.

Police said the injured were taken to the local hospital, where one died at last midnight and another died early today. The others were still in the hospital.

The entire state also experienced spells of heavy rainfall and stormy weather accompanied by lightning, especially in Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore districts.

Railway services at Howrah were delayed due to heavy rainfall.

The maximium temperature recorded in the city was 34.3 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal while the minimum was 20.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, Met officials added.
