Madurai, Apr 4: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has dismissed a batch of petitions seeking permission to hold 'Jallikattu' (Taming of Bulls) during temple festivals.
A bench comprising Mr Justice S Manikumar and Ms Justice R Bhanumathy, dismissing the petitions filed by residents of some villages in the State last evening, held the petitions could not be admitted as the temple festival season was over.
Such petitions should be filed within four weeks before the festival date. The residents of Melur and Keezhapatti Villages in Madurai District, Devakottai in Sivaganga District and Aviyur Village in Virudhunagar District filed the petitions seeking permission to conduct the event in their villages during festivals.
The Supreme Court had granted permission to conduct 'Jallikattu' only during January and February. But, the villagers sought permission to conduct the events after February for which the respective district authorities denied permission.
