Burney to verify Sarabjit's documents, witness accounts

Chandigarh, Apr 4 (UNI) Former Pakistani minister and UN Human Rights Council advisory committee member Ansar Burney today said he would verify the documents, provided by death-row prisoner Sarabjit Singh's family, to ascertain whether his was a case of mistaken identity Mr Burney, who collected the documents, including a video CD and copy of an FIR about Sarabjit Singh facing gallows in Pakistan for his alleged involvement in 1990 serial blasts in Lahore and Multan, told newsmen here that it would take him some time to find out the truth.

Even if an iota of doubt comes in a case of death penalty, the award must be commuted, he said.

Mr Burney, who held dicussions with the Punjab State Human Rights Commission here, said he would cross-examine the witnesses who deposed against Sarabjit Singh in the serial blasts cases, to reach the conclusion.

Mr Burney had stated that he would soon take up the issue of Sarabjit's release with the newly-formed government in Pakistan.

He had assured the family of Sarabjit Singh that he would fight till end to achieve the re-union of the family, which has undergone untold suffering for the last 17 years.

However, he had also stated in several fora that he had no sympathy for terrorists.
