Panaji, Apr 3 (UNI) The Dempo group of companies has announced a Rs one crore fund for the promotion of sports in Goa, with international tennis star Natasha Palha to receive Rs 20 lakh over the next two years.
The anouncement was made by Dempo chairman Shrinivas V Dempo on the occasion of the induction ceremony of Under-14 Asia No 1 Natasha Palha as the first Dempo Goodwill Ambassador yesterday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Dempo said his group strongly believes it has the social responsibility to give back to society what it earns from the land.
Mr Dempo said the funding was in response to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat's appeal to industrialists to partner with the government to promote sports in Goa.
Mr Dempo said the fund is meant to encourage sportspersons up to the age of 16 who have been domiciled in Goa for at least five years and have achieved a mark at the international level or have won gold or silver medals at the national or state level for two years. Further details would be made known soon, he said.
Mr Dempo disclosed that for performances at the international level, one would be eligible for Rs 20 lakh for two years. This is the amount that Natasha will get. At the national level, one would be eligible for Rs ten lakh for two years while at the state level, the amount would be Rs five lakh.
Goa Sports Minister Manohar Azgaonkar, who was also present on the occasion, expressed gratitude. Mr Ramakant Angle, working president of Goa State Lawn Tennis Association, also spoke on the occasion.
