Srinagar, Apr 3: The defence authorities in Kashmir have ordered an inquiry into the death of a civilian in a firing by troops of Rashtriya Rifles. They also expressed regret over the killing in the wee hours yesterday.
A defence ministry spokesman said, ''Army deeply regrets the unintentional killing of the civilian. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.'' He said the troops laid a cordon in general area of Manchhihom in Anantnag district on the intervening night of April 1 and 2 following a specific information about the presence of militants there.
He said in the wee hours, the troops noticed some suspicious movement. However, on challenging, the individual did not stop.
Later, the troops opened fire and killed him on the spot.
He was later identified as Gama Bakrwal resident of Rajauri who was mentally unstable.
