Polic e today open fire in air, mamata calls bandh

Barasat, Apr 2 (UNI) Police today opened fire in air to disperse a rampaging mob on Taki Road at Kadambagachi under Barasat police station, while Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee has called 24-hours North 24 Parganas bandh tomorrow.

Police fired two rounds in air while, no casualty was reported in the incident.

A good number local inhabitants earlier during the day put up a blockade on the busy state highway, protesting the miscreants, who had allegedly torched an almirah of books of girls' Madrasa at Napara under Barasat police station.

Some books of the Madrasa were burnt as it came to the notice of the Madrasa people this morning causing chaos in many areas of the district.

Aggrieved over the iunciendents, the people paralysed the surface communication system on the national and state highways during the day.

Train services on the Barasat-Hansnabad section were also disrupted as the agitators, put up blockade at Sandalia Station in Eastern Railway for about three hours.

At least 3 police vehicles were also damaged during a clash between policee and the protestors.

Trinamool Congress Supreme Mamata Banerjee along with other party leaders visited the Madrasa and inquired of the incident. She alleged that miscreants had been trying to terrorise by means of such attacks to create unrest in the state before the Panchayet elections.

She also announced a 24-hours bundh in the district tomorrow in protest against lawlessness.

However, surface communication and train services in the district have been exempted from the purview of the bandh.
