Ahmedabad, Apr 1 : Now, you can adopt an animal at the Ahmedabad zoo. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has extended invitations to corporate world in the State.

The concept of 'Friends of zoo' inviting corporate and animal lovers has been initiated by the Corporation.

The Kamala Nehru Zoological Park, popularly known as Kankaria zoo is planning to implement the initiative in a bid to give it a world-class look and create awareness about wildlife among citizens.

People will get an opportunity to select their favorites from 2,500 animals including birds in the zoo.

The adopting company and individual will be given a certificate acknowledging their participation that will further help them deliver their corporate messages from the zoo.

Authorities expect to collect seven million rupees from the adoption scheme that will be spent on the maintenance and the makeover of the zoo.

They consider it as a move to preserve the wildlife with the active participation of stakeholders in the society.

"We want to create the awareness about the environment when somebody will adopt them, they will have to pay the money only for food, cost and maintenance which will be from Rs 2,000 to 2 lakhs. This will give them a complete idea of the animal behaviour and their habitat," said R.K. Sahu, Kankaria zoo superintendent.

A private radio channel in the city has shown interest in adoption of animals and feels it's a social responsibility of every individual to contribute towards the preservation of animal kingdom.

"Ahmedabad zoo is considered as one of the best zoos in the country. So considering all this in mind, I think it is a very good initiative. Upkeep of the zoo is also part of a corporate responsibility and people should come forward and take part as a citizen," said Bineeta Parikh, Executive Producer, Radio Mirchi.

AMC has reportedly decided on the rates of adoption for animals, but still is working on the final proposals.

Such schemes are already operative in many zoos in Mysore, Bhubaneshwar and Lucknow.
