Panaji, Mar 31 (UNI) The Nokia India Telecom Park at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu would provide 30,000 jobs by the end of next year when it fully becomes operational, said, Nokia India Operations Director Sachin Saxena.
Addressing a strategy session on ''Towards universal access-from anyone to anywhere to anything'' here, Mr Saxena said the factory, close on the heels of its second anniversary, has created a record by making 125 million handsets in just 27 months.
''This is a record breaking operation and the plant is all set to emerge as one of the biggest employment generators in the region,'' he claimed adding that when all the seven global component suppliers in Nokia's Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will start their operations, the park will provide jobs to 30,000 people.
''This will happen by the end of 2009,'' Mr Saxena said.
As committed while launching the factory in 2006, the company has laid the foundation stone for the second phase, pumping in an additional investment of 75 million dollars.
With this, the total investment in the Nokia manufacturing plant and the Nokia Telecom Park, has reached upto 285 million dollars, Mr Saxena said.
The factory presently employes 8,000 people, with more than 70 per cent women from the region. Nokia Telecom Park has signed up with seven global component manufacturers that included Salcomp, Aspocomp, Foxconn, Perlos, Jabil, Laird and Wintek.
Of these, five have already started their production and the remaining two suppliers are likely to commence production by the middle of this year, he said.
