Mumbai, Mar 31 (UNI) Cancer needs to be detected in the early stage for proper diagnosis and treatment, and should be prevented rather than cured, Vice President Hamid Ansari said here today.
Speaking at the Second Cancer Aid and Research Foundation (CARF) Annual Awards function, Mr Ansari said, ''Late detection of cancer leads to complications and is not easy to treat as proper medication is still not available in the market.'' Tobacco in its various forms is the primary reason for cancer and villagers are the most affected, Mr Ansari added.
Speaking on the occasion, Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir said there are more than 4 lakh cancer patients in the country and since tobacco is the main culprit in rural and urban areas, glorification of the same should be avoided by the media.
The Second CARF Lifetime Achievement Award and Excellence in the Field of Oncology award was given to Bangalore Institute of Oncology HOD (ENT) Prof Dr Ram Mohan Tiwari and Dr Balabhai Nanavati Hospital Chief Radiation Oncologist Dr Nagaraj Huilgol, respectively.
