Tiruchirapalli, Mar 31: About 30,000 people affected by Tuberculosis (TB) have been completely cured over the last seven years in the Tiruchirapalli district, Collector T Soundiah has said.
Speaking on the occasion of the 'Tuberculosis Day' here yesterday, jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association, Chennai, and a few other Non-Governmental Organisations along with the state government, he said 2,500 TB patients were identified for treatment this year in the district.
More NGOs should come forward to create awareness among the people about the availability of free treatment for TB patients, he said.
Later, talking to newspersons here, B Abdul Samath, Deputy Director of Medical Services (TB), Tiruchirapalli, said about one crore people in India were suffering from TB.
He said 307 village health nurses in the district were looking after TB patients and the department had appointed 21 more volunteers to visit houses to provide drugs and help to needy TB patients.
