SRM confers Doctorates on Kasturirangan, Kumar Mangalam
Chennai, Mar 30 (UNI) Eminent Space Scientist and former ISRO Chairman K Kasturirangan and renowed industrialist and Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla were today conferred with honorary Doctorates by a leading private educational institution today.
The Doctorates were conferred on them by SRM University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu at the University's third convocation function, held at its campus in suburban Kattankulathur.
Dr Kasturirangan, also a Rajya Sabha member, was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of space technology, vision, dedication and devotion, the citation said.
Dr Birla was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) in appreciation of his outstanding achievements in the field of corporate business.
In the convocation, 3,016 students from 46 disciplines - 26 branches in PG courses, 18 UG courses and two Diploma courses - received their degrees from UGC Chairman Prof Dr Sukhadeo Thorat.
The PG degrees were awarded to 1,064 students and UG degrees to 1,851 students. About 101 students were awarded diploma certificates.
Rank holders, 30 students from PG programmes, 18 from UG programmes and two from Diploma courses, were presented gold medals.
In his welcome address, the University Vice-Chancellor Prof P Sathyanarayanan said this was for the first time that the University was conferring Honorary Doctorates on two eminent personalities of the country.
