Chadigarh, Mar 29 (UNI) Eighth seed Rohan Gide and ninth seed Ajai Selvaraj, both ranked 1404, were shocked in the first qualifying round of the 10,000 US dollar India 5 Futures ITF's Men's Circuit at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Stadium here today.
Unseeded Mithun Murali upset Rohan in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 while Chinese Zhuo-Qing Zhou pulled off a mild upset by shocking ninth seed Ajai Selvaraj also in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Out of eight wild cards, only three could move into second round of the qualifying draw.
Siddharth Gulgule, Arvind Singh and Prashanth N Vijay Sunder kept their hopes alive as wild card entrants.
Wild cards Armaan Choudhary, Deepinder Bains, Raahil Dhruva, Mandeep Yadav and Romanian Stefan Leonte made their exit.
Though Bains lost, he was not disgraced as he went on fighting to Vikram B Reddy in three well-contested sets. After splitting the first two singles, Bains extended his rival to the tie-breaker.
Reddy won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
Fifteen Indians and six Chinese advanced to the second round.
Third seed Virali Murugesan of India overcame a stiff resistance from American Ryan Young before registering a hard-fought 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 verdict.
