Shillong, Mar 29: The North East People's Alliance on Trade Finance and Development has expressed concern over the mining of natural resources and other extractive industrial activities. The Alliance, a conglomeration of NGOs from North Eastern states, said the region had been witnessing a spurt in mining and related activities by both Indian and foreign corporations and increasingly facilitated by international financial institutions.
Acknowledging that past mining of oil, gas, uranium and other minerals had resulted in severe exploitation of the indigenous people in the region, the Alliance strongly warned that stealing of resources from indigenous communities without due consent would lead to further prolonging and exacerbating the present conflict in the region. In an e-mail statement here today, the Alliance resented the ongoing crisis of illegal Khasi land transfer to the French Lafarge, which had further mortgaged it to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Finance (IFC).
'' Lafarge cement is now known to have masterminded in illegally obtaining indigenous Khasi people's land and further mortgaging it to these Banks to get loans. Despite strong protest, both Lafarge and ADB/IFC have not returned the land, '' the statement said.
