Dravid joins 10,000 run club in tests

Chennai, Mar 29 (UNI) Batsman Rahul Dravid today became the sixth player in Test History and third Indian to reach the 10,000 run barrier, when he scored his 80th run on the fourth day of the first cricket test against South Africa at M A Chidambaram Stadium.

Dravid, who had already reached the 10,000-run mark in ODIs, reached the coveted mark in test cricket also, when he moved to 80, adding 15 runs to his overnight score of 65.

Soon after he achieved the milestone, the packed stadium gave him a standing ovation and acknowledged the cheer from the dressing room. Saurav Ganguly, who was at the non-striker's end, walked up to Dravid and hugged him.

In test cricket, Dravid is the third Indian and sixth in the world to achieve this landmark. Brian Lara heads the elite club with 11,953 runs, followed by Sachin Tendulkar (11,782), Allan Border (11,174), Steve Waugh (10,927) and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122). He also reached his highest score in Chepauk by surpassing his previous best of 81 against Australia during 2000-2001 test series.

Early in the morning, Opening batsman Virender Sehwag surpassed his previous best of 309, which he scored in Multan in 2004, to score 319 (the highest by an Indian in test cricket) from 304 balls before he was caught in the slips by Neil Mckenzie off Makhaya Nitni.

India also reached its highest test score against the Proteas, surpassing the previous best of 466 scored in Kanpur in 2005.
