Una, Mar 29 (UNI) Zila Parishad member Balbir Bagga was today unanimously elected as Chairman of the Una Zila Parishad.
Earlier, the house had passed a resolution for unseating the sitting Chairperson Parveen Sahota, who owes allegiance to the Congress, while Bagga is aligned with the BJP.
The post of the Chairperson is reserved for a Scheduled Caste candidate.
In a house of 17, twelve members today voted in favour of Balbir Bagga.
Later, Mr Bagga was accorded a reception at the PWD rest house by BJP MLAs Virender Kanwar, Satpal Singh 'Satti' and Balbir Chaudhary besides former BJP state President Jai Kishan Sharma and former minister Parveen Sharma.
Mr Kanwar, who is also the district BJP president, said their party had reinstated democracy in the Una Zila Parishad by allowing a candidate to be the Chairperson on the basis of majority in the house.
It may be added that despite the claims of a BJP majority in the house, Parveen Sahota had been declared victorious two years ago and Bagga had been contesting the elections in the court of law.
