India-Singapore economic cooperation stepping up

New Delhi, Mar 28 : Senior Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and India's Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi today to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.

Goh Chok Tong is on a 6-day visit to India to identify new opportunities for investment in India's northern states.

Speaking at a lunch hosted by Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi, Goh pointed out that Singapore would like to hasten cooperation with India in three areas namely India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, India-ASEAN open skies policy and setting up a Special Economic Zone in India.

The Senior Minister of Singapore pointed out that this will be mutually beneficial and will increase trade and investments between the two countries.

He also said that ever since the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation agreement has been signed between India and Singapore, bilateral trade between the countries has shot up to 40 percent last year.
