UT to support ''black out'' during 'Earth Hour'
Chandigarh, Mar 27 (UNI) The Chandigarh Administration has appealed to all the City Beautiful residents to support the 'Earth Hour' event and switch off lights on March 29 at 2000 hrs.
The event, being organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), for creating awareness about global warming, would require voluntarily switching off of lights on March 29 at 2000 hrs to represent united concern about global warming and climate change.
In Chandigarh, the initiative has been taken by a group of B.Tech.
students "Environment saviors" including Brhamesh Alipunia, Sahil Kamal, Abhilasha Bhasin, Divya Soni, Swati and Prashant Chopra all from UIET, Panjab University.
A social group of UIET, Panjab University, named 'MITRA' is also observing the Earth Hour in the University.
Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis.
Last year, WWF Australia, pioneered Earth Hour and it was a huge success, almost 2.3 million Sydney siders participated in the event including 2100 businesses, resulting in a 10 percent reduction on the electrical grid, saving 25,000 tonnes of Carbon dioxide.
Many departments of Chandigarh Administration including Public Relations, Environment, Forest and Wildlife and Electricity have also extended their support for the event. Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) has also given its consent in promoting the event.
