Washington, Mar 27: Hollywood legend Richard Widmark, who earned an Oscar nomination for playing a psychopath in 1947's film 'Kiss of Death' has died aged 93 after a lengthy illness.

Widmark's wife, Susan Blanchard, said the actor whose long career was marked by playing villains, tough guys and cowboys, died on Mar 24 at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut. "It was a big shock, but he was 93," People quoted her, as saying. Widmark's most memorable role may have been his first. As Tommy Udo, he gleefully pushed a wheelchair-bound woman down a flight of stairs in "Kiss of Death" with a maniacal laugh that made a lasting impression on moviegoers. The handsome, laconic actor even dabbled, though infrequently, on TV, including a memorable 1955 episode of I Love Lucy. Widmark's first marriage was to writer Jean Hazelwood, which lasted from 1942 until her death in 1997. He and Blanchard married in 1999.

Widmark is survived by Blanchard and Ann Heath Widmark, his daughter from the first marriage.
