Undertrials go on fasting in protest
Mysore, Mar 26 (UNI) Over 200 undertrials of the Central Prison here began a hunger stike from last night alleging harassment by the jail authorities.
Police sources said that suspecting the presence of cellphones and movement of narcotics, the jail authorities had beefed up security checks on undertrials from last two days.
The undertrials alleged that the officials had thrown out the food last night making it inedible instead of serving it to them in the pretext of security check up.
However, Jail Superintendent Veerabhadraswamy told newsmen that the undertails began the protest last night and were locked up in the barracks.
Mr Veerabhadraswamy said that they had been insisting on allowing food to be brought from their houses which was against the jail rules.
Consequently the undertails refused to have the breakfast served this morning, he said.
While the convicted prisoners went about their daily routine which begins with the breakfast served within the prison.
ACP Ganesh visited the jail and tried to pacify the agitated undertrials who refused to budge and wanted the IGP (Prison) to intervene in the mater and discuss with them.
A tight police security was clamped around the jail by positioning a KSRP contingent of 30 personnel to manage any eventuality.
