Puducherry, Mar 26: PMK Parliamentary party leader Prof M Ramadass has urged the Centre to provide a one-time special grant of Rs 95 crore to undertake works to find a permanent solution to the problems arising out of floods in the Yanam region of the Union Territory.

In a letter to Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz, he said extensive damage was being caused to property in Yanam due to floods every year and eventhough the territorial administration had sought a financial assistance of Rs 72 crore from the Union Home Ministry in 2006 and a Central team visited Yanam, no steps were taken to provide the assistance.

Prof Ramadass pointed out that with the Union Government earmarking Rs 8,000 crore for state schemes during the eleventh five-year plan, the case of Yanam was a fitting one. As per the report of an expert committee, damage in Yanam could be averted by undertaking five remedial measures which would cost Rs 94.86 crore.
