Kokrajhar, Mar 25 (UNI) Local people critically injured a Bodo militant when he went on an extortion drive in Bajbari area under Barpeta Road police station in Assam today.
Police said two National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants had gone to collect money from some workers under NREGA in the area after four other cadres of the outfit had issued extortion notice at the site last evening.
When the militants came to collect the money, the workers at the site chased them and caught one of them. He was severely beaten up by the people and was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.
The other militant, who possessed a pistol, fired several rounds and managed to escape. However no one was injured.
The NDFB, in ceasefire with the government, has a camp near the area. The outfit had been reportedly flouting ceasefire ground rules with its cadres staying in illegal camps, carrying arms and indulging in extortion and kidnappings.
