Fernandes advise against beacon lights for all MPs
New Delhi, Mar 24 (UNI) Former Defence Minister and senior Parliamentarian George Fernandes today advised against allowing red becon lights for all MPs as it would'' sow seeds of anger and alienation among the people.'' In his letter to Rajya Sabha MP J P Aggarwal, who headed the Rajya Sabha panel that recommends allowing beacon lights for all MPs, Mr Fernandes said beacons and flashing lights disturbs the general public as the occupant of the car often misused it two jump the signals. The people will feel that they are 'aam aadmi' elbowed by 'Khas Aadmi', the VIP,'' he said.
Mr Fernandes who has handled several ministries in the Union Cabinet from Communications, Industry, Railways and Defence said, during his five decades of public life, he found no merit in the idea that it helps an MP in his or her work. ''It is nothing but a status symbol that doesn't go with the spirit of the Constitution,'' he added.
