Port Blair, Mar 24: The Chennai Port Trust(CPT) has earmarked the berthing of Andaman bound cargo vessels at Chennai Port, following vigorous efforts made by Andaman and Nicobar Administration at various levels.

A letter from Mr K Suresh, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust said the Chennai Port Trust had passed resolution for coastal vessels carrying cargo from Chennai to Andaman and Nicobar Islands and vice-versa to overcome the delay in berthing of coastal vessels without recovering priority berthing charges, an official release said here today. Meanwhile, the Andaman Chamber of Commerce has express its gratitude towards Andaman and Nicobar Administration for sorting out this problem, which was also affecting the massive tsunami reconstruction works in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Since last few months there were complains that Andaman bound cargo vessels were not given priority at Chennai for berthing, for which the Cargo Vessels had to wait for weeks near Chennai, causing huge loss to businessmen.

As Andaman and Nicobar Islands do not have any factory or industry, all materials needed for Tsunami reconstruction are being brought from mainland India.
