500-seat girls hostel for tribal, NE students at DU soon

New Delhi, Mar 24 (UNI) Fulfilling a long-standing demand, the Delhi University will construct a 500-seat girls hostel for students from the North East and tribal areas.

The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tribal Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) for the construction of the hostel, likely to be completed by September 30, 2009.

The hostel, to be set up at Dhaka Housing Complex of the University, will have modern facilities, including energy efficient building solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.

Besides blocks for 500 students with accompanying facilities, the hostel will have one provost flat, two warden flats, two resident tutor flats and twelve servant quarters.

Out of the approved construction cost of Rs 23.33 crore, 40 per cent will be shared by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the remaining amount by the DONER.

The Tribal Affairs Ministry has already released Rs 2.6 crore in the first week of March. Land for the hostel will be provided by the University as per UGC norms.

A committee comprising of representatives from the Tribal Affairs Ministry, DONER Ministry and Delhi University will regularly monitor the progress of construction works and meet at least every quarter for inspection and to discuss the related issues to ensure timely completion of the project.
