Islamabad, Mar.23 : Former Chief Minister of Pakistan's Punjab province and senior Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, is likely to contest as his party's candidate for the post of Pakistan Prime Minister.
PML-Q sources said that the party had decided to field Elahi for the top slot, but a final decision would be made on Sunday after consulting all party MNAs.
"The party leaders in the Saturday meeting were unanimous on the name of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. However, as some of the party colleagues could not attend the meeting, the announcement was postponed till Sunday morning," said a source, adding that even the PPP-Sherpao and PML-Functional had endorsed the nomination.
Earlier, PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain told a press conference that the party had decided in principle to field its nominee for premiership.
"We have decided to field our candidate as the political battle should not be left uncontested. Since the consultation with some of our colleagues is yet to be made, the name of our candidate would be announced on Sunday," said Hussain.
"We will not leave the field open for the coming ruling alliance and bring the candidate of the opposition to contest the election for the prime minister according to democratic traditions," The News quoted him, as saying.
