Lucknow, Mar 22 (UNI) Three members of a dalit family, including two minors, were killed early this morning in Kanpur.
Of the three victims, two were girls, identified as Pragya (5) and Sikha (3), while the third was their mother Anita (25).
Sunil, Anita's brother, was reported to be the killer, who even attempted suicide after the incident.
However, Sunil was admitted with a critical wound at the hospital.
Senior Superintendent of Police of Kanpur Anand Swaroop said the killing was an aftermath of a dispute within this dalit family at Chakeri village of Shamnagar police station area in Kanpur .
The SSP said 30-year-old Sunil Prajapati was so far the main suspect.
Sunil lived with his two married sisters Sunita Devi (23) and Anita Devi (25), while their mother lived in a hut at Chakeri on the outskirts of Kanpur town.
The family was gripped by abject poverty.
Sunita and her mother Annapurna, who worked as housemaid returned home at about 9 am today after work and found Anita, her two daughters lying dead with their throats slit.
At one corner of their hut, Sunil was also lying with blood pouring out from his body.
A blood stained axe by which the killer had attacked the woman and her children was found close to him.
Preleminary investigation of the police revealed that jobless Sunil was suffering from depression over a family dispute.
He had even tried to commit suicide in the past.
The police suspect that he had killed the trio in a fit of insanity.
