Nellore, Mar 22: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said his government would continue the free power scheme for the agriculture sector till the Congress ruled the state.
Addressing a party meeting here, Dr Reddy said the government introduced the free power scheme for agriculture after the Congress regained power in May 2004. The scheme would be continued for the benefit of the farmers, he added.
Stating that the Congress government was fulfilling the promises made in the election manifesto, including the waiver of power debts to the tune of Rs 1200 crore on the day he assumed charge as the Chief Minister, he alleged that the opposition Telugu Desam party (TDP) was trying to lure the people and farmers by announcing one per cent interest loan to come in power.
''The previous TDP government has failed in protecting the distressed farmers. It did not introduce even a single scheme to save the farmers from their debt burden'', he added.
