Govt officials recovering debt from farmers illegally: RS Member
New Delhi, Mar 20 (UNI) Claiming that government functionaries were recovering debt from farmers taking advantage of their ignorance about the waiver announced in the budget, Congress Member in the Rajya Sabha Mohsina Kidwai today urged the Centre to direct states to check such incidents.
Citing reports from Akbarpur-Sadatpur village in Mawana Tehsil of Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, she said the functionaries were misleading innocent farmers, saying that no debts had been waived by the Government and were giving receipts dated earlier than the presentation of the budget.
Ms Kidwai said that the incident was not the only one, as such illegal recoveries might be taking place elsewhere too.
She said it was a serious matter impacting the poor farmers and involving government functionaries.
''I urge the government to send an immediate directive to state governments to check such incidents of illegal recovery of debt,'' she said.
