Good Friday observed peacefully at Eraiyer
Villupuram, Mar 21 (UNI) Good Friday was observed peacefully in the tension-torn Punitha Madha Jabamalai Church at Eraiyer here today.
Police said 10 Dalit Christians attended the function in the church.
Heavy police force was posted to prevent any untoward incident.
The Madras High Court had directed the Tamil Nadu government to give proper protection and maintain law and order at Eraiyer for the Good Friday and Easter Mass Prayers.
The village had witnessed violence on March 9, when Dalit Christians, staging a protest demanding a separate Parish, following discrimination at the hands of Vanniya Christians, were attacked by the latter and their houses ransacked.
When police arrived at the scene and tried to disperse the mob, one group targetted the police, forcing them to open fire. Two people were killed in the police firing.
