Madurai, Mar 21 (UNI) In a veiled attack on the Left parties, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram tonight said ''around 60 members of Parliament find fault with whatever Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and he does for economic growth.
''They say that the economic growth is irrelevant and only a small group of people had benefitted from it,'' the Minister said.
Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Thiagarajar College of Engineering here, Mr Chidambaram said only because of high growth, the government was able to implement many development programmes for the people.
''If we continue to grow close to nine per cent, by 2020 India's per capita income will be 2000 US Dollar and by 2050 it will be 16,000 US dollars.'' Mr Chidambaram said the Indian economy would become so large that it would be among the top three countries in the world.
''If we continue to grow at this rate, India will be among the most prosperous countries in the world,'' he said.
Listing out various development programmes, he said ''if the growth rate continues, I will provide Rs 15,100 crore for the Sarva Siksan Abhiyan Scheme and Rs 8,000 crore for the midday meal scheme in the next year.'' UNI GSM JT DB2334
